International Peace Youth Group and Melbourne Local Organization Cooperated to Promote Long-Term Environmental Sustainability

Melbourne, June 7th, 2024 — International Peace Youth Group (IPYG), Melbourne volunteers has continued its collaboration with Canopy Accelerated Co-operative Limited, WynTree Nursery to volunteer for environmental sustainability and climate action. On Friday, June 7th, 2024, volunteers resumed repotting 325 seedlings following their initial efforts on Saturday, when where they repotted 166 seedlings (total 491 seedlings repotted). This effort contributed to the growth of future tree canopy in Wyndham and the western suburbs of Melbourne.

Walter Vilagonzalo, Canopy Accelerated Co-operative Limited, WynTree Nursery president, addressed the pressing issue of climate change by increasing tree canopy cover in areas currently exhibiting the lowest percentages within greater Melbourne. The western suburbs, including Wyndham, face significant environmental challenges, with canopy cover percentages falling well below the city average. This initiative was planned to particularly veil the widest range possible, as increasing tree canopy cover reduces urban heat islands, improving air quality.

The involvement of IPYG Melbourne highlights the role that the younger generation plays in conservation efforts. IPYG Melbourne is dedicated to promoting peace, social justice, and environmental sustainability through community engagement and volunteerism.

An official from IPYG Melbourne said, “By participating in activities like the re-potting event, young volunteers are directly contributing to the fight against climate change and setting a positive example for their peers.”

Walter Vilagonzalo expressed his gratitude towards the IPYG Melbourne volunteers, acknowledging their invaluable support and dedication to environmental conservation. He emphasised the critical role of such partnerships in driving significant progress towards a more sustainable future.

Statistics show that Wyndham and the western suburbs have some of the lowest tree canopy coverage in Melbourne, which exacerbates local environmental issues. Increasing this canopy cover is not just a local necessity but a global imperative. With approximately 20,000 seedlings currently housed in WynTree Nursery, the efforts of organizations like IPYG Melbourne are crucial in ensuring these seedlings grow into robust trees that will benefit the community for years to come.

Looking ahead, IPYG Melbourne and WynTree Nursery plan to conduct a "Trees for Peace" campaign, further solidifying their commitment to environmental conservation and community engagement.
